How a Diverse

and Inclusive Culture

Can Prevent

Sexual Harassment

5 min

A diverse and inclusive culture can fortify your team or organization against sexual harassment.

In a diverse and inclusive culture, it’s harder for people to protect and promote only people who look like them — because there are fewer people who look like them.

Which means that common exclusions, like “boys clubs,” are less likely to happen.

In an inclusive culture, people are more likely to share ideas, be honest, and question the status quo.

Challenging the status quo includes confronting the small exclusions that can lead to sexual harassment, for example:

• crass jokes
• assigning women "office housework"
• excluding women and minorities from social opportunities, etc.

And finally, people on inclusive teams feel like they have the power to report sexual harassment if it happens. Because they know that their voices will be heard.

Time for a quiz.

Glen wants to protect his team from sexual harassment. Why should he focus on diversity and inclusion to do that?

TAKE THE NEXT STEP:

Look at your team. Is it diverse? Are there lots of different backgrounds represented? And is it inclusive? Are people from different backgrounds treated equally?
