Facebook provides a few customization options for their chat feature. You can access them by clicking the gear icon at the bottom right of the screen. Here you can opt to activate the alert sound for chat messages. You can also customize who can and cannot see you in the chat window by selecting "Advanced Settings." A window will pop up allowing you to manage which friends, groups or lists can contact you via chat. Click the second radio button if you'd only like to appear online in certain friends' chat windows, or you may choose to turn off chat entirely. Click "Save" to ensure Facebook remembers your personal chat settings.
