Gmail offers a variety of options for sorting your email, helping you decide what you see when you open your inbox.

Mouse over the "Inbox" link and click the arrow to the right.

This dropdown lets you choose between the different inbox types.

Your inbox is automatically set to "Default," which contains the "Primary," "Social," and "Promotions" tabs unless you've changed that in the "Configure inbox" menu.

Gmail's "Priority Inbox," the last choice, automatically sorts your messages into three categories: "Important/Unread," "Starred," and "Everything Else." The three other display options, "Important first," "Unread first," and "Starred first", do exactly as they say, with all other emails falling under the "Everything else" section regardless of stars or importance.

Your Priority Inbox is sorted based on your patterns of use: messages are marked as "Important" if they have things in common with messages you respond to frequently, such as the people involved or their content.

You can also edit, change or add sections for each option by selecting the dropdown arrow on the right.

Choose how many emails are shown in each section, or even add an entirely new section for emails to get filtered under.
